What is the Functional Skills English Level 2 Online Exam?

In essence, it’s a Ofqual approved exam used to gain a Level 2 English qualification. Which is the equivalent of a PASS in GCSE English. Our affiliation with multiple exam boards, including Open awards and City & Guilds ensures that we can get you on the correct exam that will best suit you.

The exam itself will be taken online, so it will be done remotely from the comfort of our own home. So no need to travel! One of your highly trained invigilators will be assigned on you on the day of your exam to help you through the process, as well as ensuring that exam conditions are met. All you need is:

  • A suitable computer of laptop

  • A suitable web browser

  • A clear web camera

  • A clear microphone

Exam Content

Reading Exam (1 hour)

This is the first part of the exam process. It consists of an analysis task, where you go through different texts, then answer questions on those texts. As well as identifying/discussing the types of texts and navigating them. It will test your reading comprehension.

Writing Exam (1 hour)

This is the second part of the exam process. It consists of writing long-form answers in response to different scenarios. You will be assessed on your:

  • Spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Grammer
  • As well as your sentence structures

You will gain a large part of your marks from displaying the ability to write clearly and effectively, essential to passing the exam.

Speaking, Listening, and Communication Exam

This is the final part of the exam process. It will consist of assessing how you communicate around a group of other people also taking the exam to assess your skills in effective speaking, listening, and communication.

Yes! A Functional Skills Level 2 qualification is seen by employers and universities as an equivalent to their according GCSE.

We cannot disclose this information exactly as the answer to this changes all the time, the average for the Functional Skills Level 2 exams is between 50% – 60%, varying from paper to paper. The Functional Skills Level 2 English Exam is consistent of 3 sections, the Reading exam, the Writing exam, and the Speaking, Listening and Communicating exam (SLC). The Reading and Writing exams are both 1 hour long, and done back to back. The SLC exam is 1 hour and 30 minutes long, and is usually sat on a different day to the Reading and Writing exams.

The Functional Skills Level 2 exams are not free unfortunately! However we do have some course content to help you study that is available for free. It isn’t as extensive as the paid version but it is still very helpful and is a great way to help you start studying properly!
